Put Down the Cellphone
Holy Geez. As I stated before, I am the new owner of a Blackberry. I love my phone, and I will be the first to admit I am an addict. Hello, I am a user on www.crackberry.com. However, I still do not get the unwillingness of people to shut of their cellphones for what ever reason. Seriously, most people are really not *that* important that they cannot be without phone service for an hour or two.
Still, everyday I see people who aren’t doctors, lawyers or anyone who would warrant being important enough to keep on the cellphone, balk, get angry with me, question why it is a rule, amd even refuse to comply with our no cell phone rule. I have to get down right nasty with people who refuse to turn of their phones, and kicked people out for texting or talking in the lab. I just don’t get it.
1) The people in my lab are taking a TEST. What kind of testing facility lets people talk on their phones during the test?
2) Ok so why all the way off?
- Some phones on vibrate are still loud enough to be quite distracting
- Even if the phone is on silent there is the tempation to answer it
- Each time a student gets up to leave the lab, it distracts the other testers. Some distractions are expected, but we do not want to make more distractions
- Talking on the phone while others are trying to test is just PLAIN RUDE
3) It underminds the validitiy of the test.
- even on silent you can still text. The ability to send and receive data while testing means you can get help on questions and you can send ou data about the testing content…and that just doesn’t fly
- Camera Phones: the phone is still on…it can send pitcures of the test materials and questions…if I have to explain this to you…well yes you need more help than I can offer
4) The Lame Excuses:
- I’m expecting an important call. Well maybe you should have come in to test at a better time when you would not be expecting said call.
- I’m a mom or My kids are with the sitter. Yes and mothers went for decades without cellphones. Heck my mom did. Yes, something horrible *might* happen to your children for the hour to two hours the phone is off. However, that is a remote chance.
- My phone is one of the new ones that won’t turn off. HAHHAHAH! All phones WILL POWER DOWN…and if for some reason they will not, you can always pull the battery…seriously how stupid do I look?
Sometimes you just have to think about it…we have very good and valid reasons for not allowing you have phones on. It may put a crimp in your style, but really it isn’t the end of the world.
