How could you do that to an animal?

Published by jennlee3741 at 12:11 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I adopted/rescued a parakeet this past weekend. This little girl was:

1) In a chicken wire cage that was way too small

2) Kept on a back patio

3) NOt being properly fed or watered

Here is the deal. A friend came to me and said a friend of the family found a parakeet, and it was having some major behavior issues. She asked me if I could stop by and check on the bird and maybe help this woman out.

I was nice to this woman. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. When I saw the living conditions, I didn’t go completely postal. She said she found the bird and she wasn’t sure how to care for it. I gave said woman all she needed to properly care for the bird until she was able to go to Petsmart. I still feared the woman was not ready to fully care for the bird. The bird was a screaming almost constantly and very unhappy. She needed better living conditions and some training to help withe behaviour issues.

I gave her a couple days, and then went to check on the bird, but I was stalled. This threw up tons of red flags for me, and I was prepared to have to remove the bird from the home. I made arrangements to stop by the next day, and somehow she forgot about an appointment, and failed to call me to reschedule. I told her I would be back the next day. I even called as I was leaving work to verify. First, the woman told me she had sold the bird to someone else. She told me that since I had not left her any money, she sold it to another woman. Okay…I didn’t pay her (which BTW we never discussed buying said bird. ) I was going to help her get the bird’s screaming under control. I also told her if she could not provide a good home for the bird, I would take the bird in. Also, I left at least $50 worth of supplies for her to use that she apparently had no plans to return. The woman hung up on me three times while tried to talk to her. I went by the house and amazingly, the bird, she said she sold, was still there and in her chicken wire box. All the supplies I gave her were still in the box I had given her to them in. I was livid. Suddenly she claimed the woman she sold her to changed her mind, but my mind was made up. I grabbed my cage and I got out my phone. I took pictures of the conditions the woman was keeping the parakeet in. You know the whole chicken wire nastiness outside with empty food and water dishes. I moved the bird from the chicken wire into my cage and headed for the door.

The woman of course protested, but I kindly reminded her that I had pictures. If she tried to stop me from taking the bird. I would be calling Animal Control before I cleared the driveway and also e-mailing them the photos. She would not only lose the parakeet, but they would probaly also take the rest of her pets away too.

I left that house, and as soon as I brought the little girl into my apartment, she started to beak grind. Okay when birds beak grind, that means they are content. I named her Chloe and so far she has been happy as a clam ever since. My boys are happy, but this little girl is super happy 24/7. I don’t know if she knows she was saved, but she does know she is in a good place. I have not had any behavior issues with her at all thus far, and I hope she gets along with the rest of the flock!

Here is the deal…before you get a pet, make sure you know how to take care of it. In this woman’s case she claimed to have found it, but she didn’t do her homework to figure out how to care for it. The result: this poor baby parakeet had a miserable existence. What kind of person doesn’t see that, and the even when people try to help, they still treat the animal poorly?

Jen, I feel the same way! There are so many people who get pets without doing any research!! I have been thinking about getting a dog, but I won’t make my final decision for a few more months - I am researching different breeds, their needs, and trying to make a good fit for both of us.
It’s a shame more people aren’t thoughtful and intelligent like the 206 gang :)
